This is truly a "prosumer" system and it's constantly being worked on and improved, if that's even possible. Why I ever considered Mach3 or UCCNC is beyond me. The support on their forum is second to none and there are tons of videos and support documents for the Acorn on their site. I recently (within the last month) converted a Chinese Blue Elephant 6090 CNC router I bought used on Craigslist over to the Acorn board and I'm completely satisfied with their hardware and software. I too am an actual user of the Rev 4 Acorn board. Here's a video of my machine running on Centroid. There's a lot of guys using Acorn for their lathes and I haven't seen anything but happy customers. I am however looking to build a bench top CNC retrofit lathe and will be using a Acorn for that machine as well. I'm not using it for a lathe I have a router. Do yourself a favor and sign up for their forum as it's the place to have all your questions answered. I have zero complaints and it was very easy to get up and running and I had zero CNC experience. The acorn kind of looks perfect, apart from its low I/O count (both machines have atcs)īut I can’t find many reviews of the acorn online by people who have actually fitted one.Īnyone here with good/bad experiences?I'm a actual user and I looked at everything prior to going with Centroid Acorn.

"The Acorn controller, which connects to a Windows 10 PC via Ethernet for robust PC to CNC hardware communication, can command most popular servo motors and drive packages as well as stepper motors and drives since the Acorn outputs industry standard step and direction drive command signals.I’m about to retrofit a small denford mill and a lathe, I have a Uccnc board I could use in the mill but I like the idea of having the same control in both, and Uccnc isn’t really ready for turn. "The Acorn control hardware was designed from the ground up to work in conjunction with Centroid's CNC control software, eliminating typical hardware/software incompatibility issues found on other DIY systems," said the spokesperson.

The CNC control board hardware and CNC12 control software is included with the kit along with a logic power supply and hookup cables. Acorn is both a CNC hardware and CNC software solution.

Both mill and lathe CNC software are included with the Acorn CNC control kit. "The Ether1616 is designed to work the Acorn CNC controller, which is a 4-axis CNC control system that combines Centroid's robust CNC12 CNC control software and offers the DIY user industrial grade CNC features, options and performance at an entry level DIY price point," said a company spokesperson.

The new software user interface features an easy drag and drop menu to assign functions to any of the Ether1616's inputs or outputs to command a variety of CNC machine tool functionalities. The Ether1616 inputs and output are easily configurable using Centroid's Acorn CNC Setup Wizard. The Ether1616 communicates with the Centroid CNC12 software via Ethernet connection for fast, reliable service. There are indicator LEDs on Ether1616 Inputs and on the Relay 8 Modules that indicate the state of the inputs and outputs. The provided dedicated power supply is sized properly to provide enough power to drive the 16 relays. Sixteen relay outputs are provided as well and can handle a wide array of voltages and currents.īoth the Ether1616 and Relay 8 modules provide both Din Rail mounting holes and Standoff mounting holes to allow the DIY installer a variety of mounting possibilities. Input voltages are mix and match capable and are selectable via bank of four of inputs at a time with the provided plug-in SIP (Single In-line Pack) resistors. Three different input voltages can be used: 5 volts, 12 volts and 24 volts. Up to three Ether1616 boards can be added to an Acorn system for a total of 56 inputs and 56 outputs. The new i/o module, the Ether1616, adds an additional 16 optically isolated inputs and 16 relay isolated outputs to the system. Centroid has expanded its DIY CNC controller capabilities with a new Ethernet based PLC Input/Output expansion module for the Acorn CNC controller.
